Sherrie Wolf: Object Lessons
SALEM, Ore. — The Hallie Ford Museum of Art is pleased to present "Sherrie Wolf: Object Lessons" opening Aug. 1 in the Study Gallery and Print Study Center and continuing through Oct. 25. Organized by Director John Olbrantz, the exhibition focuses on the work of this highly regarded Portland artist who juxtaposes exquisitely rendered still-life compositions with Old Master themes. The exhibition includes paintings, prints, and other works on paper by the artist, drawn from private collections throughout the region.
Olbrantz says, “As a painter and printmaker, Wolf has embraced the postmodern aesthetic of appropriation while employing a classical approach to art-making. By juxtaposing traditional still-life objects with Old Master themes, she offers a fresh approach to the still-life genre that is unique in contemporary art, and that places her work at the forefront of a long and distinguished tradition that dates back to the late Gothic period and even earlier.”
Born and raised in Portland, Wolf was educated at the Pacific Northwest College of Art, where she received her BFA degree in painting in 1974, and the Chelsea College of Art in London, where she earned her MA degree in printmaking the following year.
Wolf returned to the United States in the mid-1970s and began to teach at the Pacific Northwest College of Art, where she taught from 1978 to 1985 on a part-time basis.
Over the years, she has been featured in numerous one-person and group exhibitions throughout the United States, including regular solo exhibitions at the Laura Russo Gallery in Portland since 2004, and a major exhibition at the Long Beach Museum of Art in California in 2014. Her work is included in numerous public and private collections throughout the United States, among them the Portland Art Museum and Hallie Ford Museum of Art.
Wolf's work will also be featured in the upcoming "Stilleven: Contemporary Still Life" exhibition opening Sept. 12 and continuing through Dec. 20 at the Hallie Ford Museum of Art. The exhibition explores the work of 27 artists and their diverse approaches to still life through a variety of mediums including paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, photographs, glass and mixed media.
Lecture
Wolf will discuss her work over the past 35 years in a free lecture at the Paulus Lecture Hall at the Willamette University College of Law on Friday, Sept. 11 at 5 p.m.

About the Hallie Ford Museum of Art
Oregon's third largest art museum features works by Pacific Northwest and Native American artists, and includes a diverse collection of traditional European, American and Asian art, as well as artifacts that date from antiquity. Frequently changing exhibitions include lectures, special events, tours, artist demonstrations and educational opportunities for children and adults.
The museum is located at 700 State St. in Salem. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. The galleries are closed on Monday. General admission is $6, $4 for seniors and $3 for students 18 and older. Students 17 and under and children are admitted free. Admission is free for everyone on Tuesdays.
