Nelson Sandgren: An Artist's Life
May 14 – July 17, 2016
Maribeth Collins Lobby, Study Gallery and Print Study Center
The Hallie Ford Museum of Art at Willamette University is pleased to present a concise retrospective exhibition of the paintings and prints of Nelson Sandgren (American, born Canada, 1917-2006), an important Corvallis, Oregon, artist and teacher. Organized by Professor Emeritus and Senior Faculty Curator Roger Hull, Nelson Sandgren: An Artist’s Life features 33 works of art drawn from public and private collections throughout the region.
Nelson Sandgren created art in three primary media—watercolor, oil, and lithography. Roger Hull, says “Sandgren produced interrelated but distinct bodies of work that could each have been an artist’s lifetime accomplishment. Sandgren’s three-fold oeuvre assured him a wide swath of exhibition opportunities, allowing him over decades to reach viewers throughout the Pacific Northwest, up and down the West Coast, in museum exhibitions nationwide, and in gallery shows in Europe.”
The exhibition is accompanied by a full color, hardcover book with an extensive essay by Professor Hull that places Sandgren's work within the broader context of American and modern art.
A variety of exhibition related events have been planned with Roger Hull and Erik Sandgren (Nelson Sandgren's son), and offer new insights into the life and times of this important and influential Oregon painter and printmaker.
