John R. Stahl: Oregon Artist

John R. Stahl (American, 1937-2017) was a multi-talented artist, educator, and environmental activist who was born and educated in Michigan. Stahl and his wife Janet decided to move to Portland in 1967 so that he could enroll in the Museum Art School in Portland. Attracted by the beauty of the Oregon Coast, the Stahls built a house in 1979 on Netarts Bay near Tillamook and settled there permanently.
Organized by professor emeritus and senior faculty curator Roger Hull, the exhibition features a wide range of Stahl’s artwork from the past 45 years, including paintings, assemblages, and works on paper drawn from the Hallie Ford Museum of Art’s permanent collection and several private collections.
The exhibition is also presented in conjunction with the publication of a full-color, 136 page hardcover book on Stahl’s art, life and career, written by Hull with additional short essays by Janet Stahl, former Portland Art Museum curator Bonnie Laing-Malcolmson and Portland artist Lucinda Parker. The book will be available at the museum for $24.95 starting May 11.
