Highlights from the Permanent Collection
September 19 – December 16, 2023
Melvin Henderson-Rubio Gallery
The Hallie Ford Museum of Art opened its doors for the first time in October 1998, and over the past quarter century has built an encyclopedic collection of Western and non-Western art and has mounted a dazzling array of temporary exhibitions intended to instruct, inspire, and delight. Over the years, the development of the permanent collection has been guided by Hallie Ford Museum of Art staff and its faculty curators, as well as by the generosity, vision, and largesse of its many donors and patrons.
Images (left to right): Charles White, Gideon, 1951; Etruscan Antefix, 525 to 500 BCE; Freda Diesing, Male Portrait Mask, 1990; Relief of a Servant, Egyptian, Old Kingdom, Dynasty 6, 2350-2170 BCE.
In order to celebrate its remarkable history and growth over the past twenty-five years, the Hallie Ford Museum of Art’s director, curators, outside scholars, and others have teamed up to mine the collection to reveal its many hidden treasures, often for the first time in The Hallie Ford Museum of Art at 25: Highlights from the Permanent Collection exhibition.
The exhibition represents a visual journey through the museum's diverse permanent collection, featuring close to 100 works by Indigenous and non-Indigenous Northwest artists, as well as works from around the world, including ancient, traditional, and contemporary art, and pieces from the recently acquired Musueum of Contemporary Craft. Vistors are invited to make their own visual connections between the thoughtfully juxtaposed works of art.
Images (left to right): Lucinda Parker, Star (in the Winner’s Circle), 1979; Marie K. Watt, Blanket Stories: First Teachers, Wallamet, Crow’s Shadow (detail), 2014; Ross Palmer Beecher, 7-Up Quilt, 1988; Anna Fidler, We Can't Wait 'Till Tomorrow (Autumn), 2016.
The exhibition also explores the history of the Hallie Ford Museum of Art’s permanent collection, from its origins in the nineteenth century to its growth and development from the 1990s to the present, as well as acknowledging some of the key collectors, donors, artists, and others who have help transform it into what it is today.
In conjunction with the exhibition, a wide variety of lectures, films, gallery talks, and a family activity day have been planned, and are listed below.
Images (left to right): George Johanson, Black Rabbit's Red Room, 1978; Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Veduta dell' Arco di Tito (View of the Arch of Titus), from Vedute di Roma (Views of Rome), 1760; Carl Hall, Earth, That is Sufficient (Willamette Valley), 1950.

The Bartow Project
November 16, 2023 at 7:00 p.m.
The Hallie Ford Museum of Art | Roger Hull Lecture Hall
Free and open to the public
Join Curator of Indigenous Art Rebecca Dobkins for an evening of short films about Wiyot artist Rick Bartow (1946-2016). Each film was made with the support of the Wiyot Tribe and Dell'Arte International, a theatre workshop and school in northern California. Each of the three films take a different approach to storytelling: one employs a documentary style, another is an animated short that liberally draws on Bartow's imagery, and the third is a symbolic homage to Bartow's relationship with his wife, artist Julie Swan. Together, the films introduce viewers to the complex work and life of one of Oregon's most revered artists, whose art is central to the collection of the Hallie Ford Museum of Art.
